Skin’s Microbiome

Simply put, the skin microbiome are microorganisms that live on our skin. It’s frequently called microbiota, or micro flora.

It’s composed of a huge number of bacterial species, fungi, viruses and mites.

It may sound gross, but these all work to help maintain normal healthy skin in humans.

When our microbiomes are balanced, we see healthy glowing skin. However, an imbalance can result in impurities, ranging from minor skin infections to (rarely) even potentially fatal disease.

Here are three interesting facts about our Microbiome.

  1. Each of us has a very individual one. Even identical twins, who share 99.5% of their genes, only share about 20% of their gut microbiomes.
  2. They’re kind of like a fingerprint. The microbes that compose our microbiome are primarily concentrated in seven regions of the body: our stomach, nose, mouth, lungs, skin, colon, and sexual organs – and we each have a unique composition of microbes in each region.
  3. It may develop before we are born. Scientists have studied whether we inherit our microbiome at birth, or if it is developed in the womb. A recent study points to the fact that there are microbial signatures in fetuses as young as 11 weeks old.
  4. While they’re super connected, the Skin Microbiome and the Gut Microbiome are not the same. They work together within a direct connection called the gut-skin axis, but should be treated as separate entities. The skin microbiome is usually our first line of defense against pathogens, and often needs specialized support.

One thing is for sure. Keeping your skin microbiome balanced should be a focus of your skincare routine, especially as it relates to aging.  Products targeting microbiome health are on the rise. In fact, more than 100 products were launched last year alone, and more are on the way.

Research shows that strengthening the skin microbiome has revolutionary de-aging qualities.  Look for products that support skin health, while also promoting overall beauty like Lumiara’s Glow Face Serum

In addition to helping the skin secrete more beneficial bacteria, this line also activates different pleasure zones in the brain. It’s never been easier to look good, and feel even better.
