5 Gut Friendly Ways to Update Your Pantry & Improve Your Health

January 24, 2023

By Mara Weinstein

Turns out you don’t need to search high and low for exotic fruits or scour the internet for the latest foreign “superfood” to improve your gut and skin health.

There are much easier swaps to make that can improve the way you look and feel. They don’t require much effort, and better yet, can be made today.

And, while some of these items may not be in your kitchen right now, they’re easily found in your local hometown supermarket.

Consider making one of more changes below for improved overall health of your gut and skin.

Milk: Instead of cow’s milk, try almond milk, coconut milk, or oat milk. These options are often easier to digest and can be a good choice for those who are lactose intolerant, or have a dairy sensitivity.

Flour: The same applies to your flour. Instead of white flour, try almond flour, coconut flour, or oat flour. These will contain a higher concentration of fiber and nutrients which better support a healthy gut.

Rice: Here you’ll want to substitute your white rice for wild rice, or another grain like quinoa as these options are likely to pack a greater nutritional punch that will nourish your gut.

Snacks: Instead of pre-packaged snack foods, try a DIY version using whole ingredients. For example, you can make your own trail mix using nuts, seeds, and dried fruit. If you’re into baking, you can make a simple healthy granola bar with nuts, oats, dried fruit, and honey to keep it from falling apart.

Dressing: Ditch the multi-ingredient, chemical infused salad dressings, and make a homemade version using simple ingredients like olive oil, vinegar, and herbs. When doing so, you can experiment with extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), avocado oil, or coconut oil as they have been proven to have antiinflammatory effects, and also provide nourishment for beneficial bacteria in the gut.

These simple swaps are easy to make, and won’t break the bank.

However, there’s another alternative. If you’re not interested in making any dietary changes, you might want to consider supplements.
